The Open Water Scuba Instructor program (OWSI) is one of the two distinct components of PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), the core of PADI Instructor. The first part is the course Assistant Instructor Open Water followed by the Open Water Scuba Instructor program.
OWSI program consists of at least four days. I pushed completely into the PADI System of diver education and concentrates on further developing your skills as a professional dive educator.
Begin working with other professionals connected and jobs starting to explore PADI professionals worlwide. You also have the opportunity to continue your training by participating in specialty instructor courses that teach coaching specialties after instructor certification.
During the course you will learn how to apply the PADI system of education by exposing at least:
- 2 presentations of teaching in confined water
- 2 knowledge development presentations
- 1 teaching presentation integrating two Open Water excercises
They also will attend and participate in the following 14 curriculum presentations:
- Orientation course
- Overview of the dive industry
- General standards and procedures
- The role of media and prespective teaching
- Legal liability and risk management
- Scuba Diver and PADI Open Water Diver courses
- Adaptive teaching
- PADI philosophy of lifelong learning
- Fundamentals commercial diving instructor
- Adventures in diving program
- Diving specialty courses and Master Scuba Diver program
- Rescue Diver course
- Divemaster course
- Diver retention programs
- Teaching the PIR (Instructor from training organizations other than PADI recreational divers should do it.)
Demostrate competition in:
- Run the 20 excercises of diving up the skill evaluation.
- Run with the face in the water, swim 800 meters / yards without stopping, using a mask, snorkel and fins.
During the course, you will need to demostrate proficiency in dive theory, surpassing the five sections of the exam and minium score of 75% each.
After becoming and Open Water Scuba Instructor, you will be ablo to direct the full range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba Diving to Divemaster. You can also choose to acquire specialty instructor levels in areas of interest include Digital Underwater Photographer or Enriched Air Diver
Teh work package includes all the PADI IDC materials needed to prepare for the IDC. The 23 articles of the pack include:
- Instructor consultation tablets for basic courses (OW, AOW, Rescue and Divemaster)
- IDC Candidate Workbook and related reference materials
- Tablets of lesson planning for confined water and open water
- Booklets of questionnaires and test for core course

To qualify you for training as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, you must:
- Being certified as a PADI Divemaster or PADI Assistant Instructor or be an instructor in good standing of another diver trining organization for at least six months.
- At least 18 years old.
- Being certified as a diver for at least six months
- Have 60 logged divesthat included experience in nioght diving, deep and navigation to participate in the IDC. You'll need 100 logged dives to Instructor Exam.
- Have proof of training in CPR and First Aid withing the last 24 months. The Emergency First Response course meets this requirement.
- Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement (PDF) signed by a physician within the last 12 months.
